Do you know what GFSI certification is?

GFSI certification, or Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI) certification, is an international industry collaboration of key players in the global food industry that aims to achieve the goal of “certification everywhere, recognition everywhere” by harmonizing food safety certification systems, comparing and integrating equivalence benchmarks. GFSI certification is managed by the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and established in 2000 with the goal of improving the cost efficiency of the food supply chain and ensuring safer food for consumers through standards comparison and mutual recognition. The certification standards recognized by GFSI have a great influence in the global food industry, including the HACCP certification system, the Germany IFS international food standard, the United Kingdom BRC global food standard, etc

BRC certification is a global standard for food safety developed by the United Kingdom Retail Consortium and is one of the food safety certifications recognized by GFSI. BRC certification aims to ensure food safety and quality during food production, processing, storage and distribution, as well as that products meet the requirements of legal regulations and industry standards

The recognition of GFSI certification is of great significance for food companies, which can reduce trade costs, enhance brand reputation, and become a necessary condition for entering international markets. In addition, GFSI has established a global partnership with the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) to ensure the competence and level of certification bodies, further enhancing the global recognition and validity of GFSI certification

In May 2000, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) was launched by international food retailers, mainly from Europe. GFSI is based on food safety principles, and its main objectives are to strengthen global food safety, effectively protect consumers, enhance consumer trust, establish the necessary food safety programs, and improve the effectiveness of the food supply chain.

Although GFSI is not a certification system per se and does not do any accreditation or certification activities, GFSI recognises the authority of the scheme as a “food safety passport” to the global market.
